Unions Filing More Petitions in 2010
The Huffington Post today has a great article on the decline of organizing during President Obama’s era. The only problem is it’s wrong.
Things don’t look nearly as bleak for unions if you look at their most recent union organizing activity. For example, take a look at the chart from LRI Online. Unions actually increased their petition activity in RC cases 38% over one year ago (RC petition levels were exactly the same as 2008).
Even more telling, if you look at the combined RC petitions from December and January, the trend looks even better for unions, with the total number of petitions over the latest two-month period beating each of the prior 3 years by a pretty substantial margin (including a 30%

The Senate moved the cloture vote on Craig Becker’s nomination to the NLRB to 5:00PM on Tuesday, due to the snowstorm in DC. Here’s hoping that all 41 Republicans make it…
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka’s Special Assistant Stewart Acuff wraps our point up in a nutshell by saying, “If we aren’t able to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, we will work with President Obama and Vice President Biden and their appointees to the National Labor Relations Board to change the rules governing forming a union through administrative action…” We’ve been saying the same thing for quite some time, but now the top levels of the AFL-CIO confirm that’s the plan.
Fox News is reporting that Becker may be voted in ahead of Brown’s swearing in:

Update: Investor’s Business Daily reports that it looks like Brown will get in before Becker.
Take a look at the exchange between Becker and McCain on whether he’d recuse himself on cases involving the SEIU:

The quotes in writing don’t do justice to how Becker avoided and deflected what should have been a pretty darn simple answer. Had this question never crossed his mind (that I doubt) or did somebody think that the whole “I will comply scrupulously” answer was a good way to deflect that question?
“Appointing Becker to this board is like appointing George Steinbrenner of the New York Yankees to the umpiring crew in the World Series.”
Thanks to Jim Gray for pointing this one out…
It looks like Scott Brown will be seated later today dashing the hopes that Democrats might rush through the nomination of Craig Becker to the NLRB. We will keep you posted.
The DOL is rolling back all the disclosure work accomplished during President Bush’s Administration to shine a light on how union member’s dues are spent. Get the details here.
Becker finally got a hearing on his nomination to be one of three new NLRB members yesterday. When asked about his extremist views on the Board’s ability to get rid of union elections through regulatory action he dismissed them as the “views of a scholar” and instead will issue decisions that have “practical, concrete and important consequences,” and that he “will have a duty to implement the intent of Congress.”
Interesting news this weekend from AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. He predicted “check card” or Employee Free Choice Act will pass this year right after health care legislation. It has recently been thought that EFCA legislation would be slowed down due to Scott Brown’s winning election that ended democrats filibuster proof majority. Only time can tell, and we will keep you updated.
